Trade deadline approaches with defined buyers and sellers

The All-Star Break has come and gone, and with less than two weeks before the trade deadline, we’re looking at a fairly defined playoff race.

Right now, the National League is exactly where I left it a few weeks ago with the last Jargon: Lebowski has a 5.5-game lead on Philly Cheese, and together, they do not have to worry about falling out of the playoff race.

With Quad Eh sitting 39.5 games out of first place, there is nothing for the Dude and Cheese to worry about right now other than who will win the division.

That said, it is a very important division to win.

As we have seen in the past, the No. 3 seed can be very dangerous in that Wild Card matchup, so for both Cheese and Dude, the division title is extremely important right now.

The American League is pretty defined now, too, and if the scores hold up, fourth and fifth place are going to fall from 15 games out of third to about 25 to 30.

Welcome to Sellersville, Crox and Sex Panthers. Population: 5.

As we speed to the deadline, keep in mind that Stage 2 of the roster changes begins with the following changes (all outlined in the offseason).

Veteran keepers expand
Vet bats,” defined as any player in the pool, will go from 7 to 8 this offseason (that’s now 7 at different designated positions and 1 wild card that can be a duplicate).

“Veteran Pitchers,” defined as any pitcher in the pool, will go from 5 to 6. It’s now going to be 3 SPs, 2 RPs and 1 wild card.

Franchise Trim-down
The first trim-down of franchise players will occur this offseason. Two of the “2.099 or less” keeper slots is eliminated this offseason. That means you will be able to keep only 5 franchise guys, not 7. It will be 3 players of 2.099 or less, 1 of 3.099 or less, and 1 of 0.099 or less.

Minor League green spots
They are currently at 6. Everyone can keep six minor leaguers. Keep in mind that if your player gets called up in September, you’re going to need to trade for a replacement or just leave it empty. Leaving it empty just gives you an extra round to draft a replacement. … Also note that after the keeper deadline, the final expansion of the minors occurs sending it from 6 to 10.  There will be four extra rounds in the draft added to allow everyone a chance to draft minor leaguers to fill those four new spots. Note, if you keep a minor eligible player as a “vet” or “franchise” player, you can — in the draft — move them to minors and then draft regular active roster players.

Note for 2021
With the minor expansion in March 2020, it’s worth mentioning the final stage of the roster changes occurs in Offseason of 2020-21 where the 0.099 and 3.099 franchise keeper slots disappear.

More helpful trade reminders
It’s worth mentioning that you should be aware of what positions your players will keep in the offseason. Just because they have LF, CF, RF right now, doesn’t mean they’ll have all 3 on Jan. 1, 2020. Make sure you look at the bios, scroll down to games played at position to see how many positions they have reached 20 games at. It takes 20 to keep that designation into 2020. If no position reaches 20, it defaults to the position that has the highest number.
