Week 1 Preview

Jimmy Jammers (0-0) at Channel 4 News Team (0-0)
Series Record: Tied 2-2
Last Meeting: Week 4 (2009), Jammers won 127.1-126.1.

Matchup Notes: That’s right. The last time these two teams squared off, it came down to one point. It’s a tough way to lose, especially since it was the two-point home-field advantage that pushed the Jammers over the top.

Well, it’s a year later and the News Team is in his own house. He’s got the advantage in that department this year.

He also has the advantage in the QB department, but that’s about as far as it goes as the Jammers has the advantage at every other position.

But that does not mean the Jammers will win, because Ray Rice is running into a tough Jets defense and Larry Fitzgerald, Roddy White and Malcolm Floyd all have road contests that could be difficult.

Fitzgerald’s road game is the easiest as he and the Cards are in St. Louis, but he is nursing an injury and has a brand new quarterback to get used to in Derek Anderson. White is in Pittsburgh and Matt Ryan should have some trouble against the Steelers defense, but he should at least find White for six to seven catches, and for the Jammers, hopefully a touchdown.

Floyd will be in Kansas City on Monday night, where this matchup will be won or lost.

News Team has Miles Austin going at 8:20 p.m. Sunday, but that’s it for him. The Jammers will have Ray Rice, the Jets defense and Floyd going Monday.

At that point in time, the Jammers should be trailing with the News Team sending out Aaron Rodgers in Philly, Arian Foster at home against Indy and DeSean Jackson against Green Bay.

Still, a lead at that point shouldn’t be too high because News Team is going to struggle with Knowshon Moreno and Steve Breaston this week.

It should be a tough start to the 2010 season for both teams. If I didn’t chew my nails on an everyday basis, they’d certainly get shorter on Sunday.

Jammers’ Prediction: Jammers 115, News Team 113

World of Noise (0-0) at Dottsville Toasters (0-0)
Series Record: Noise leads 3-2
Last Meeting: Super Bowl IV (2009), Dottsville won 132.3-103.1

Matchup Notes: All I have to say is, “Ut oh.”

This could be another record-breaking week for the Toasters.

I like all nine starters for the Toasters this week. I like only four or five of the Noise’s.

Matt Schaub is going to have a great week — I will be saying this a lot this season — and anything the Noise’s Andre Johnson does this week will be wiped out by the fact that the Toasters have Schaub.

So it will be the other Johnson that breaks this matchup open.

Chris Johnson is going up against Oakland at home and that could be a field day, and Matt Forte (vs. Detroit) and Darren Sproles (against KC) could be saying the same things. The only two times that Forte ran for more than 100 yards was against Detroit. And Sproles hit double-digits in both of his games against KC.

Easily, the Toasters could have 60 points from his three RBs this week.

Calvin Johnson will certainly get a touchdown against the Bears, and Vernon Davis should be good for one, too. I’m not a huge fan of Johnny Knox, but against a Detroit Lions defensive secondary that is not very defensive and far less than secondary, I like him.

That all should be worth 120 points, at least. Then add in the Saints defense and kicker Jay Feely and you’ve got yourself a Toasters’ win.

Because you can’t tell me Chad Henne is going to come around. Not after his preseason. That means they’ll run the ball, and Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown should be OK for their usual combined 30 points, but that doesn’t leave much left for Noise.

Dallas Clark and Wes Welker could help, but Steve Slaton will not.

Neither will high-round draft pick David Akers.

Jammers’ Prediction: Toasters 139, Noise 95

Sunday Slackers (0-0) at Jawz Attack (0-0)
Series Record: First meeting

Matchup Notes: These two sat directly across from each other at the draft table back on Aug. 22. Neither were short on words and both had a lot to say about the other’s team. So it’s fitting that they face off in Week 1.

For the Slackers, Week 1 begins early. He’s got Drew Brees, Robert Meachem and Ryan Longwell going in Thursday’s opener. Attack also has his kicker Garrett Hartley going Thursday.

Starting early is always fun, but it’s scary, because if you have two key players like a QB and a WR going and you walk away with less than 25 points, you’re in trouble come Sunday.

But that isn’t a worry for the Slackers. It’s Drew Brees. Come on. He’s predicted to throw three TDs. ESPN predictions are often wrong, but I’m going to say I agree with this. In fact, let’s go with four TDs. Minnesota’s secondary was a weakness last year and it surely hasn’t gotten any better this year.

A touchdown or two to Meachem would be even nicer, but it’s always tough to predict Meachem. He’s targeted one week, and not the next. I’m guessing Colston (2), Shockey, Bush will be the TD catchers Thursday.

A worrisome start for the Slackers should be Mike Wallace. He’s going to be a star, but second-year inexperienced Dennis Dixon has to get him the ball. I’m not sure we can count on that this early in the season.

On the other side, the Slackers will look for Matt Ryan — Jawz’ starter — to target Tony Gonzalez a lot. The more points he can absorb himself, the better.

Brees will have the better of the performances for sure, but this matchup will come down to the RBs. Jawz is throwing out Maurice Jones-Drew and Ryan Grant, who have tough matchups, and the Slackers have Steven Jackson, Cedric Benson and Beanie Wells who all have interesting matchups as well.

Jones-Drew is at home against a weakened Broncos defensive line, and that could open some holes for the scat back, while Ryan Grant is storming right into the Eagles defense, which has run-stopping linebacker Stewart Bradley back for 2010. Bradley said on Philly radio this week to bench Grant if you have him. I’m going to side with him.

Still, Jones can still make a difference. St. Louis will be trailing throughout much of its game with Arizona, so Jackson will be limited in carries. Cedric Benson is in New England and this is another game where I can see carries being limited. Beanie Wells might be the best play for the Slackers if the Cards get ahead by enough points to start running out the clock.

Barring any unforeseen wideout performances by the Attack (remember, you don’t get fantasy points for Ocho-Tweeting), I believe the Slackers should get off to a 1-0 start. But that’s nothing to get excited about, Slack. Wait till you get over that 5-0 hump. … Too soon?

Jammers’ Prediction: Slackers 110, Attack 95

Fear and Loathing (0-0) at Real Houserville (0-0)
Series Record: Tied at 2-2.
Last Meeting: Week 11 (2009), Houserville won 111.8-104.2

Matchup Notes: Houserville will be hiding late Monday night. At about 10:15, Fear is going to strike and the Villains will be covering his eyes every time Jamaal Charles touches the ball. … And it’s going to be often.

Expect a shootout there in KC between the Chargers and Chiefs, which will give the scat back plenty of chances to either erase a lead or tack on to it.

But, this matchup will come down to the 1 p.m. matchups between Chicago and Detroit, and Indy and Houston.

Fear has Jay Cutler at home making his 2010 debut, hoping to erase the horrid 2009 memories. Starting against Detroit’s inadequate secondary is the next best slump-buster aside of Snookie. (I still don’t watch this show, I just like making fun of her apparent Big Easy-ness.)

Peyton Manning will go for Houserville, but Manning’s got the rival Texans on the road, and that matchup continues to get tougher as the years move on. He threw four TDs in two meetings last year, but he also turned the ball over four times. It certainly will not be easy Sunday.

This will be the QB matchup to watch, for sure.

The other thing to watch will be the Eagles-Packers game. Houserville has both the Eagles defense and the Packers Greg Jennings and Jermichael Finley. If the Eagles shut down the Packers, low point totals at those two key positions could hurt Houserville’s cause. Even worse will be if the Eagles defense fails and it’s because Rodgers finds other targets instead.

I doubt that, though, and I imagine that Rodgers is going to attack the Eagles young secondary. Outside of Asante “I can’t tackle” Samuel.

Nevertheless, Charles will be the key. Are you ready for a Monday Night Fright?

Jammers’ Prediction: Fear 119, Houserville 112

Graybill’s Generals (0-0) at Chinese Organ Thieves (0-0)
Series Record: Organ Thieves lead 4-3.
Last Meeting: Week 11 (2009), Generals won 110.1-105.2

Matchup Notes: OK. I expressed my love for Joe Flacco in the preseason. I’m going to put my man-crush off for one week.

Let’s just say I don’t like him trying to throw the ball with the Jets defense on the other side. He’s not going to have a bad game, but he’s not going to throw for 300 and a few scores.

It gets worse for the Generals as I’m not too keen on Sanchez getting the ball out to Braylon Edwards against the Ravens defense. This game may end 6-3 because I just don’t like the Jets offense.

So it’s time for the Generals to look elsewhere for points — like C.J. Spiller against Miami and Michael Crabtree at Seattle. Those are two good places to look, but unfortunately for the Generals, it won’t be enough.

The Organ Thieves, just 4-9 last season, are back with a vengeance — and a viable roster.

Phillip Rivers, Adrian Peterson, Reggie Wayne and LeSean McCoy should be good for some decent point totals. The key could be Jonathan Stewart against the Giants. The Generals have DeAngelo Williams, but as I’ve stated before, I like Stewart to be the better point-getter.

If somehow the Generals lead after Sunday night, Phillip Rivers will steal the win for the Thieves late Monday night.

Jammers’ Prediction: Thieves 130, Generals 103

T-Money (0-0) at Team Boyer (0-0)
Series Record: Boyer leads 5-3
Last Meeting: Week 11 (2009), Boyer won 102.7-93.3

Matchup Notes: Tom Brady crashed his car on Thursday.

Don’t worry. It wasn’t serious.

He will remain Team Boyer’s starter and he will have the chance to lead Boyer to his sixth victory over T-Money, which would tie a JFL record for wins against another opponent.

Brady should get his points at home against Cincinnati, but that’s about the only sure thing in this matchup.

T-Money’s Frank Gore is the next safest bet in Seattle, where the 49ers should easily roll.

But T-Money has Tony Romo at Washington, which always is a tough match for him. And another three players are tied up in the Ravens-Jets matchup — Shonn Greene, T.J. Houshmanzadeh and Anquan Boldin.

On the other side, Boyer has much favorable matchups with Michael Turner in Pittsburgh, Ryan Matthews against Kansas City and Joseph Addai in Houston.

This is a bit short because I’m just posting it to get it up, so for that, I’m sorry T-Money and Team Boyer. I’ll get you guys first next week. Good luck.

Jammers’ Prediction: Team Boyer 105, T-Money 90
