"Adam Wainwright" Rule

Let's call it the Adam Wainwright rule.

It would have been the Joe Nathan rule if I implemented it last season when the Backward Ks brought up the idea of creating a way to keep franchise players who get hurt.

So, here it is, for the rare occasion you have a star go down and out for the season before the draft.

The rule below has been implemented for the start of the 2011 season. The only team to use it as of March 10, 2011, is Ronald Duncan, who is -- you guessed it -- going to DL Adam Wainwright.

Wainwright rule: If you have a player who will be eligible for the disabled list, you can keep him as a "DISABLED LIST PLAYER." This, however, will take away one of your minor league slots. After the draft, you will have to put this player on the DL and he will be untouchable until after the trade deadline in July — even if you have to take him off the DL because he is playing and not eligible for the DL. This will be self-enforced by the League Manager.

The idea for this rule is to allow you not to lose a player like Adam Wainwright because he will be out for the entire season, while at the same time not take up a veteran roster spot. It also can help if you have a player go down who will come back later, but you can't afford to lose him or deal with the open roster spot. So if someone is out for 2 or 3 months and you decide that you can't waste a regular roster spot on him but you don't want to lose him before the draft, you can DL him and use him after the trade deadline.

The only way a player who is put on the DL before the draft can play on a roster before the trade deadline is if he is traded. So if Chipper Jones is ruled out for two months, you put him on the DL and trade him in May, that owner doesn't have to wait for the trade deadline to start him.

You can DL up to five players, but remember, for each one you DL, you lose a minor league spot. (The regular-season DL is a total of five players, so if you use them all before the season, if even possible, you will have no room for any injuries during the season.)

I think that is pretty clear. If for some reason it isn't, let me know and I'll clear up any questions. Do so on the message board.

If you are ever going to employ this rule, be sure to notify the League Manager.
