Not-so-perfect Bombers

The N.J. Bombers can never, ever, ever, ever bench a starting pitcher again.

I don’t care if there is a certain strategy to it, he is no longer allowed to bench a starting pitching — especially in early May.

You may be asking, “Why?” and, well, I’ll tell you.

Francisco Liriano tossed a no-hitter Tuesday and he did it on the Bombers’ bench. Almost a year ago to today — May 9, 2010, to be exact — the Bombers left Dallas Braden on his bench, and all he did was throw a perfect game.

That’s a big ouch.

You think he would have learned his lesson last year.

OK, well, all jokes aside, I don’t blame him. The Twins have been awful, and primarily, they’ve been awful when Liriano and Carl Pavano have started.

Even Liriano’s no-hitter was ugly. He walked six and had he walked five of them all in the same inning, he would have tossed a no-hitter and lost. The Twins only won 1-0 and they still sit 9.5 games out of first place behind the Indians, who are tied with the Phillies with the most wins in baseball (20).

It’s a long climb for a “division contender.”

And it won’t be easy without Mr. Joe Mauer, who apparently cannot play catcher anymore. He’ll try, but his time behind the plate is really running out. That is bad news for the Twins, and not because they’re losing an All-Star catcher in Joe Mauer, but the traded away the guy who could take over for him last season, Wilson Ramos.

The Nationals got a steal — a win that turned into a wash after they spent $126M on Jayson Werth — when they sent Matt Capps to Minnesota for Ramos.

Ramos will be their starting catcher and bat .300 for the next 8-10 years. Capps will not last half as long in the bullpen for the Twins, if that. That’s a huge mistake for the aging, breaking down Twins. Their season was relying on Carl Pavano and Francisco Liriano duplicating their great 2010 season; Justin Morneau returning to his All-Star form; and Joe Mauer leading the team.

Well, Pavano and Liriano have been — for the most part — awful; Morneau is batting .217; and Mauer is still on the DL (stop doing commercials, Mauer. Not well played.)

It’s going to be a long season for the Twins — and the Bombers, if he keeps benching no-hitters and perfect games.
