JFL Week 3 Recap: A Week To Forget

It was one of those Sundays.

The kind where you're sitting down at 5:30 after suffering through the 1 o'clock games realizing that it isn't your day.

This season sees me owning an extra fantasy team as I helped my wife draft — a.k.a. did all the leg-work — a fantasy team in her work league.

She had the seventh overall pick and I watched a lot of players go off the board that I wanted, and seeing as it is a two RB league, I overreacted and grabbed the "best" back on the board, Ray Rice.

As soon as I did it, I was pissed because I knew I wasn't high on him, but I grabbed him because, jeez, I don't know. Absolute brain fart.

Anyway, I digress. This past weekend, Ray Rice is listed as questionable throughout the week, so I picked up James Starks thinking that'd be a decent backup plan if Rice is out.

Rice was finally listed as out on Sunday, so I put in Starks.

He ran for a few yards and then boom, he went out.

And that was the start of it all.

I had the same issue with the JFL. Reggie Bush said he wanted to play, but the Lions forced him to sit out, which in turn forced me to search for a possible backup. Our waiver wire is not so friendly when it comes to RBs, so I was stuck on Sunday morning making the decision between the Jets' Bilal Powell and Chris Ivory. I chose Ivory and he went out with a bad hamstring after four carries. ... Great.

I was going to start him in the No. 1 spot, but I decided to give David Wilson one more try. But in a mammoth blowout to the Panthers, he only got 4.9 garbage points on the final two drives when the Giants were down 38-0.

So after Ivory went out, I just decided to shut off the Red Zone channel and take a nap. It was a good nap.

And I'm glad I did, too. The 4 o'clock games were no different. The Colts and Dolphins won in games I didn't expect to see them win, which hurt in my NFL Picks League. And they weren't the first upsets of the day. That was the theme Sunday as teams like Cleveland and Cincinnati pulled out wins that they weren't expected to.

Same thing happened in the JFL.

The Noise, our version of the Cleveland Browns, took down the Channel 4 News Team, who is our version of, well, I guess we'll go with the Green Bay Packers since he has Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers had a very un-Rodgers-like game, scoring just 18.4 points, which was disappointing for the News Team after Jamaal Charles had such a great start to the week. His 24.6 points on Thursday, however, didn't make a difference.

The Noise had the waiver wire pickup of the week — one that makes the Jammers mad — as Joique Bell took the place of Reggie Bush and did his best impersonation of him with 63 rushing yards and 69 receiving yards on 24 touches. His 20 fantasy points, added with Wes Welker's 15.8 and Julius Thomas' 10.3, did the trick.

That's three straight double-digit weeks for Wes Welker and four TDs on the season. Not bad for a second-round pick. After making fun of the Noise for his first round selections, we have to give him a little credit.

Not too much, though. He's still just 1-2.

One-and-two.

That's the record of more than half the JFL. Seven teams are 1-2, including everyone's favorite Slacker on Sunday. He barely escaped against the Jawz Attack, but Drew Brees scored 42.1 points and the Slackers' backup plan for Rice — admittedly a better one than mine for Rice — was Bernard Pierce and he scored 13.6 points. That allowed Demaryius Thomas to score 11.4 points and finish off a Monday night comeback over Jawz. The Attack also had misfortune on Sunday as Jermichael Finley went out of the game and scored zero fantasy points. If only he had started backup Zach Miller who scored two TDs.

T-Money had a similar issue with the winning points on his bench, the only difference was, it wasn't a injury that kept him from winning. It was Eli.

After Eli exploded in Week 1, the T-Money decided to make the change from Romo to Eli. A move in prior years, I certainly would have done myself, but I'm not so certain in 2013. The Cowboys offense is clicking and Romo's got some great weapons. Dez Bryant has developed into a nearly unstoppable receiver, one of the few in the NFL, A.J. Green joining him in those ranks. And when defenses put extra men on him, Jason Witten takes over. And this weekend, we saw that if the defenses try to stop both, DeMarco Murray will take over.

This is a pretty good Cowboys team, perhaps one that can actually win a playoff game. At this rate, they'll have a good chance because all the teams in the NFC East are awful. A pair of 0-3 teams — Giants and Redskins — and an Eagles team that has played about 45 minutes of good football out of 180, and 30 of those minutes came against the aforementioned Redskins.

So if I were the Money Man, I'd give Romo the nod and stick with him.

That's right. Stick with your main guys.

It's a tough thing to do in fantasy football. A lot of times, you want to react to what happened the week before, but most times that ends up hurting you — hence the reason I've been way too lenient with David Wilson. Lord knows I'll give up this week and he'll score three TDs.

Fear and Loathing went the other way and saw a back blow up on his bench last week so he threw him into the lineup only to see him score 4.7 points. Darren McFadden, who he benched, scored 13.

Not like that mattered much though. Houserville showed why taking Jimmy Graham in the first round was one of the best moves in the draft thus far. With back-to-back 27-point weeks, Graham has helped the Ville win two straight. Add that with Cam Newton's 40.5 and it was an easy win.

With Kimbrell Thompkins getting going on the bench, this has the makings of a good team. Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson had mediocre days Sunday, but the Ville could afford a day off from them.

I'm sure they'll have a few more big weeks in them, certainly enough to hand him the division title.
