JFL Week 8 Recap: Lions & Cowboys & Megatron, oh my

In the Week 8 JFL preview, I pointed to the Dallas-Detroit game as being an important piece to the my personal success on Sunday.

Who would have thought that it would impact so many other matchups?

The game that was sluggish and defensive for about a quarter and a half, really took off in the second half with both the Cowboys and Lions putting up fantasy points galore.

The most noteworthy was the JFL-record 41.7 points scored by Calvin Johnson, lifting the Toasters over Houserville 111.5-95.6. Johnson caught 14 passes for 329 yards and a touchdown. He nearly had a 90-yard touchdown in the first half, but he was tackled just short of the goal line. He did score a few plays later, but the Toasters (and the Jammers) missed out on that two-point bonus for a 40-plus-yard TD.

But he didn't need it as Houserville's Lion, Joseph Fauria, did not catch a single pass, and that was painful to watch as I'm sure the Ville must have been busy Sunday morning at 11 a.m. when it was announced that Jimmy Graham would play in limited plays in the red zone. Turns out "limited" plays meant every single goal line opportunity that New Orleans had, and they had several.

Graham had only three catches, but two were for TDs and he finished with 16.3 fantasy points, enough to beat the Toasters.

The Slackers also had to cringe at his tight end from the Dallas-Detroit game. Jason Witten managed just two catches for 15 yards and the 1.9 points was one of four positions to score 3.8 points or fewer, including Rueben Randle's big zero and Chris Ivory's 11 yards. (Told you.)

Even worse for the Slackers, in a matchup where he lost by eight points, 100.9-92.9, was the News Team's kicker, Dan Bailey, who provided the punch with a big 17-point performance with his two 50-plus-yard field goals, another in the 40-yard range, and three extra points.

Ouch.

It's an even bigger "ouch" when you factor in that the Slackers' QB, Drew Brees, dropped a 50-burger on Sunday, which was more than half of the team's output. Even News Team popped on the Gamecast Chat Sunday afternoon to say something about the 50 points.

But all was well Sunday night as Aaron Rodgers scored 31.1 fantasy points to seal the comeback win.

Also benefiting from the back-and-forth Lions-Cowboys game was T-Money, who with Tony Romo in the lineup and the Lions defense going for his opponent, Graybill's Generals, was enjoying every Cowboy score. Three TDs in all for Tony Romo, who notched 32.6 points which was enough to cancel out the 31.4 points that the Generals got from Colin Kaepernick.

It also gave the Lions' defense a big zero for the day, and losing by 9.8 points, 101.7-91.9, he really could have used a bigger defensive performance.

Where were the traditional Tony Romo late-game picks-sixes?

Man, the Generals needed that from his defense.

Too bad the defense on his bench did exactly that, and even more weirder is the fact that the Redskins defense scored exactly 9.8 points, the margin of victory.

With the Skins in the lineup, the Generals could have forged a tie.

But we can't blame him for benching the Redskins. Against Peyton Manning and the Broncos, why on Earth would you start the opposing defense?

It was that same fear that led to my worries that the Organ Thieves were going to run me out of town, and that would have be true if it weren't for the 92.2 points I got from four players in that game (Matthew Stafford, 36.2; Reggie Bush, 18.8; Dez Bryant, 21.9; and Terrance Williams, 15.3).

In the other two matchups in the JFL, both the World of Noise and Fear and Loathing won games that made the four aforementioned Week 8 losers jealous of. Both scored in the mid-80s and easily beat their low-scoring opponents.

For the Fear, it gets him back into the playoff hunt as he is tied (not considering tie-breakers) at 3-5 with the Slackers and Houserville. The Noise, winners of six straight, now owns a three-game lead with five left to play. He could clinch the first playoff spot if a lot of things work his way.

But he won't really know it because he'll be on an 11-day cruise starting Sunday.

And he's not the only one. The Jargon also will be on said cruise for our sister's wedding and we'll be out of touch until Week 11.

That means no preview or recaps for Weeks 9 or 10. I should be able to recap "what I missed" when I get back on Nov. 14.

Until then, I hope you enjoy the silence, and I hope co-commissioner Parker Dunbar doesn't wreck the JFL, because I'm leaving him in charge.
