Fear must know something that none of us know about Carson
Palmer.
Week after week, he carried two kickers and two defenses,
stubbornly pushing aside multiple opportunities to acquire QBs on the waiver
wire.
Finally, on Thursday, he added Drew Stanton, who will back
up Palmer like he has much of the season. He’s not slated to play. … That’s why
I’m wondering what Fear knows. Does he have a magic crystal ball that tells the
story of a great Carson Palmer injury that will lead to Stanton’s great week?
I seriously doubt it. And that makes you wonder why Fear
waited so long — too long — to get a backup QB.
He was content with Andrew Luck, and for nine weeks, the No.
1 QB in the game has remained healthy and put up the numbers to lead Fear to
the JFL’s best start all time. Right now, he’s looking to become the first team
to finish a season undefeated.
Standing in his way is the only team to finish a season with
just one loss — your favorite Jimmy Jammers. The last thing I want is for Fear
to break my record, so I can at least do my part in trying to at least forge a
tie for best record all time.
And my chances are good considering the fact that Fear
couldn’t get a starting QB for Week 10.
With the 15th slot in the waiver claim, he walked into the
Week 10 not in a good position to get one. He thought for a moment he’d have a
shot at Mark Sanchez, who will take over for Nick Foles, but the Philly Cheese
Steaks were quick with that No. 2 waiver slot to get him.
That left one QB on the wire who was going to start in Week
10, and that’s Josh McCown, and it is by luck that I stumbled upon this fact.
There were no projections on any other QBs outside of
Sanchez, so I assumed I was OK, but McCown’s name jumped out at me.
Last year, in the first round of the playoffs, Fear
destroyed me. I had the unfortunate freak snow storm that ruined the week for
two top players, Matthew Stafford and Reggie Bush, and then Fear got an insane,
unimagibable performance from backup QB Josh McCown. He scored more than 50
fantasy points in Week 14 last year to send my team packing.
So, that is why when his name jumped out at me, I decided to
click on the “notes” icon next him. There it read: “McCown will start this week
for Glennon.” And like that, with my 12th waiver slot, I added him to my team.
If all goes well, that move should score me a negative-20
points for Fear. He’s missing out on at least 10 points there — unless, of
course, his Palmer prediction is solid.
The only other matchup in the JFL this week involving teams
with winning records comes in the NFC where the aforementioned Sanchez-led
Philly Cheese Steaks host the Chinese Organ Thieves.
The Cheese is missing a few players due to the bye week,
including Arian Foster and Cordarrelle Patterson. The latter may be a blessing
as he’ll put Mike Evans into the lineup, a move he should have made last week.
Dwayne Bowe also gets the start, and though he hasn’t had a double-digit
performance in 2014, he’s getting consistent looks. Maybe against Buffalo, he
can have one of those random 30-point days we’ve seen from him in the past.
For the Thieves, he laughs at 30-point days. His QB scores
that in one half. Ben Roethlisberger will get the nod against the 32nd-ranked
passing defense. With 120 fantasy points and 12 TDs in two straight weeks, why
not. If he throws another six this week, I’ll be speechless for the recap. ESPN
is only projecting four, so we’ll see. The Thieves could certainly use another
six TD week because the rest of his team has been a bit sluggish.
Both teams are 5-4 and fighting for their playoffs lives.
The Steaks are in better position, tied for first in his division, while the
Thieves are two back of Team Boyer, needing a win to stay in good positioning
for a Wild Card.
The Thieves may get some help from T-Money because he has a
good chance against Boyer, who at 7-2 enters the Tom Brady bye week with
Michael Vick at QB. He also had a poor start to the week with Jeremy Hill
scoring just 5.3 points on Thursday. T-Money, on the other hand, got 12.5 out
of Ben Tate.
Boyer, however, isn’t in as bad of shape as News Team, who
got just 1.8 points out of Andy Dalton and zero of out Andrew Hawkins, who
didn’t even play. That should give the Toasters an edge in the matchup and he
should be able to at least remain in a tie for first place in the NFC East —
especially if Megatron comes back strong.
The other matchup involving a first-place team is the Jerk
going up against the World of Noise, who has lost four straight. He’ll need a
comeback on Monday night with Jordan Matthews and Greg Olsen in order to
prevent a fifth straight loss.
Houserville will look to end a losing streak, too, as he has
been cursed since starting LeSean McCoy. Two starts and two losses. Choo, who
is tied with Houserville at 4-5, will look to make it three straight and own
the potential tie-breaker in the Wild Card standings.
After this week, I should be able to make some playoff
scenarios with a clearer picture of everything. Right now, there are only a few
clear scenarios. Boyer can lock up a playoff spot with a win and losses by both
T-Money and News Team. Fear can lock up the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a win
and a Jerk loss.
