Yelich is a man on a mission

Let’s just give Christian Yelich the NL MVP award right now.

I mean, why should we play another game before deciding?

With his record-tying fourth home run in each of his team’s first four games of the season and a walk-off two-RBI double in the bottom of the ninth, Yelich led the Brewers to a big comeback win over the Cardinals Sunday afternoon.

The Brewers won three out of four in the series and look to be in really good shape from starting pitching to the bullpen to the offense, despite what all the naysayers had to say this offseason.

His four homers have the Sex Panthers atop that category early on with 12. The next closest is four teams tied at seven.

Obviously, it’s early, but Khris Davis — who also has four homers this season, of which only three counted for the Panthers thanks to the Japan Series — and Yelich are absolutely mashing the ball right now.

Still, heading into Monday, Day 5 of this 11-day matchup, the Sex Panthers are in a bit of a hole to Steroid.ERA, whose pitching has been outstanding with a 2.52 ERA, 3-1 with six saves.

Plenty of categories up for grabs, but this matchup looks a lot closer than it looked a week ago when Steroid had about three healthy starting pitchers.

SLAMMERS? BOMBERS? … SLUGFEST
Bryce Harper went yard again in a big way and the Slammers and Bombers are tied with seven homers apiece heading into the seven-day home stretch of this first matchup.

Goldschmidt has four of the seven for the Bombers, while the Slammers has a healthy mix of homers from five different players.

The Bombers hold the edge on a few batting categories, but a strong pitching start had my squad up 9-7-6.

HOT OUT OF THE GATES
Cody Bellinger is batting .500 (10-for-20) after four games with four homers, eight RBIs and seven runs scored. Grant it, one of the homers and two of the RBIs came off a softball slow pitch from a backup catcher on the mound, but still, this is an impressive start for the Dodgers first baseman.

But remember, this guy wasn’t good enough to start in Game 1 and 2 of the World Series. Dude, who leads 13-7-2 over Breakfast, will never bench him.

PADDING THE STATS
So this is how JV’s Chris Paddack looked when he arrived to pitch today (see photo on the right). He wore a black cowboy hat, big shades, a black suit and a pink tie. Paddack proceeded to go out and strike out seven in 5 innings of work in a 3-1 win. He got the no-decision, but it was still a great start for JV.

It helped him lower his ERA for the World Series rematch to 3.76 — not that he needed to lower it.

Crox is sporting a 7.91 ERA thanks to another awful day of starts by his young studs. Walker Buehler, who some had as a Cy Young candidate, only made it 3 innings and gave up five runs.

He wasn’t alone. Carlos Carrasco gave up six in 4.1, Rick Porcello gave up nine — four earned — in 2.2 and Dylan Bundy gave up three in 3.2 innings.

What is supposed to be a strength has turned into a major pitfall in this first matchup, and the ERA may be unsalvageable at this point.

I know it’s a long week, but it takes a lot to bring down a 7.91 ERA with 50-plus innings in the books.
