JLB Record Books Updated: 2016 was a big season of new records

I kept telling everyone I had a good offense last year, and the stats don't lie. I blew away the season records in homers and runs scored, and I also was close to matching the JLB hit record that I already owned, placing second all-time.

That’s what I found when I plugged in my numbers into the record book.

Then, I plugged in the Outs’ numbers, and it was all over.

"Hmm, where's my glue?" Outs says, scanning his work bench covered in
plastic airplane parts.

"It's right here," I say, handing it over.

"Jimmy?!" shouts Outs, who jumped a few feet in the air. "Jesus Christ,
what the hell are you doing in my basement?"

"Really? After last season, you have to ask why I'm in a basement below
you? I should ask you, Mr. Champion, why you are down here."

"Umm, I live here, and what the hell are you doing with my glue?"

"I was gluing Choo's mouth shut."

"Choo?" Outs says, now noticing him in the corner struggling to let out
even a murmur.

"Now what is HE doing here?" Outs asked.

"Oh, he got lost. He was looking for Parker."
In total, Outs set five new JLB records — in four instances, spoiling it for others who would have set a new record if Outs would have just gone on vacation for a few months or locked himself in his basement to make a squadron of model F-35 fighter jets.

Of course, he didn’t do that because nobody needs the F-35.

Outs, in total, had 11 stats that fell into the JLB Top 5 all-time. Mind you, we are only an 11-by-11 league, and I only keep records for 18 categories.

He blew away the home run record, blasting 275 during the regular season. Choo held the original record at 226, which I bested with my 231. Outs, that show-off, had to out-do me by 44.

Part of that had to do with the lineup he assembled, but another part had to do with the numbers in baseball.

In the JLB record book (which I’m slowly expanding to Top 10, and it’ll take a few years for some categories to populate to 10) you’ll notice that six teams in 2016 hit home run totals that were good enough to beat out the Top 5 listed last year. It’s partially why I decided to expand to Top 10.

Running through the record book and finding this many homers in one year made me wonder — were we just better at setting the “right” lineups, or did MLB see a major boost in homers?

The answer, a combo of both, I think.

In 2016, MLB teams combined for 5,610 homers, which was a 701 increase from 2015. Runs (21,744, up 1,097) and RBIs (20,746, up 1,096) were also up big, which explains the new records set in each.

Then again, triples saw several teams squeak into the original Top 5, and MLB totals were down 66 triples from 2015 to 873 for the year.

In total, 40 marks were good enough to crack the original Top 5 in categories, and Outs owned 11 of them. Crox, who now owns the new JLB record in hits with 1,566 — he just edged out Outs who had 1,561 — was second with six “Top 5” records, and Cheese Steaks had five.

Here’s a look at the updated single-season records. (Note, 1. Some categories aren’t at 10 yet and will take time to get there; 2. This is only regular season. Playoff totals do not count toward overall season totals.)
